Perhaps an Antenna on sale in a retailers promotion has caught your attention, the illustration looks good, the price seems good, must be good - right ? The fact is, it might be. But there is a stronger chance it might not be. Antenna selection is not necessarily about the size or the price, the true measure of the Antenna is calculated from what you need the end result to be and that end result is at the wall plate connection for the TV. To understand this you need to consider how many outlets you want to run a quality signal to, the length and type of cable run, the quality of the fittings and the intended location of the Antenna itself. According to this, the calculation of the loss will help to establish the degree of gain that is necessary and consequently indicate the properties of the antenna required. These main factors of Antenna design will then determine the resulting picture quality: Gain (power ratio rating) of the Antenna Front to Back Ratio (signal direction integrity) VSWR (signal transfer quality) Polarity (horizontal or vertical) An added complexity to this is the advent of Digital TV. An Antenna with a conventional balun may not provide comprehensive delivery of all the digital services being broadcast, so an Antenna with a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) balun should be considered. To explain, the Digital channels in Australia each consist of 6817 separate carriers transmitting video and audio data. These carriers can be divided to transmit different services simultaneously and broadcasters are now making better use of this ability. For example, Network 10 transmits services identified by the receiver as 1, 10 and 11 all on digital channel 11 whilst the Nine Network transmits services as 9 (SD), 90 (HD) and 99 (GO!) all on digital channel 8. To ensure quality of service, the balun too is a critical component in providing what is referred to as 'multiplex flatness' across all of the 6817 carrier streams.
