Water overflowing from the high-fronted gutters is not directed away from the house - as regulations insist - but back into the wall cavity. There, electrical wiring is exposed to the moisture and the water can rot timber frames and plasterboard walls. As much as 85 per cent of new guttering installed on NSW homes is high-fronted, attached to a building's fascia by a spring-clip system. This makes the entire guttering system non-compliant with building codes and Australian Standards because provision for continuous overflow does not exist. Home owners may face huge repair costs in years to come, setting the stage for fights between insurers, builders and plumbers over who should foot the bill. Last year NRMA Insurance received 48,000 storm related claims, with overflowing gutters cited as one of the four most common reasons for water entering homes. This did not prevent the then minister, Burney, telling the Herald in July that her office had "yet to receive a complaint where it is evident that water overflowed a gutter and entered into a roof." Behind the scenes, however, both the Government and the industry have been taking steps to cover their backs ever since the Herald published a story last February alerting readers to potential damage to their homes from non-compliant guttering. The web of misleading, confusing and contradictory messages about gutter, installation dates back at least to 2008, when high-fronted gutters were first linked to water damage. NSW is suffering an epidemic of DIY dad disasters and experts have warned our fascination with home makeover shows is only making things worse. Since 2010, NSW hospitals have performed 57,000 procedures for ladder-related injuries at a cost of $51.8 million, according to a new report by the Agency for Clinical Innovation. Tragically, 51 people have died after falling from a ladder in a non-occupational setting during that time. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital co-director of trauma Dr Michael Dinh found the overwhelming majority of cases have involved men 55 and over. He said while our ageing population was ¬becoming more active, their balance had not improved. “Nowadays they are getting on motorcycles and climbing up ladders; it’s an emerging health issue,” Dr Dinh said of over-55s. “You have more DIY shows now and more head injuries. The alarming figures from the National Injury Surveillance Unit show DIY injuries are steadily rising. "It would be a rare week when we didn't see a serious injury," said Dr Tim Heath from Sydney Hospital's hand unit. "We always see a spike after long weekends and especially after Father's Day."
