I n Queensland, all smoke alarms must comply with the Australian Standard AS3786:2014. Quick facts: * Before 1 January 2022 - At the start of each tenancy, sale of property or renovation, any smoke alarms must be replaced with like for like photelectric smoke alarms, (not Ionisation alarms) on all floors, in all bedrooms, hallways and a path of travel to exit the dwelling in case of a fire. * By 2027 all properties are to have interconnected smoke alarms installed in all bedrooms, hallways and between areas containing bedrooms like hallways and where there is a likely path of travel to exit the dwelling in case of a fire. * The interconnected photoelectrical alarms must either be hardwired or wireless and have a non-removable 10-year battery. * Hard wired Smoke alarms must be installed by a qualified licenced and insured Electrician. * Smoke alarms should be maintained at least every 12 months, Asset Aircon & Elec provide this service, while at the same time replace broken smoke components. * Interconnected Photoelectric Smoke alarms must be replaced every 10-years. What to look for in a Smoke Alarm? * Ensure the alarm complies with the Australian Standard for smoke alarms, newly installed smoke alarms must comply with the current version of AS3786:2014. * The smoke alarm must have a pre-installed 10-year non-removal lithium battery and be able to monitor their own battery level and warn you when the battery needs changing by beeping every few seconds. * Must have an easy test and hush button feature. * Allow for special features for people with hearing problems, such as ultra-loud alarms, strobe lights and vibrating pads that can be installed next to your bed. * Design features should include an insect screen to prevent insects and dust built up in the air inlets, as it could set off nuisance alarms.
